Journeying Self (Kindle)

Journeying SelfThey have enriched my understanding of myself and my place in the world Until recently however I had not read Natanson s 1970 book about the self Natanson published it when he was teaching at the University of California at Santa CruzFirst some comments regarding the book s somewhat unconventional structure The notes and bibliography take up a massive 40% of the total book s somewhat unconventional structure The notes and bibliography take up a massive 40% of the total of pages As the notes provide a running commentary on the ideas and thinkers discussed in the text and are so voluminous they virtually constitute a book within a book Initially I found this to be very distracting as the notes interrupted the line of argument in the main body of the book However I found that ignoring the notes completely until I had finished the chapter provided me with an additional and deeper context for each chapter s material I now appreciate his approach to footnoting and referencesAnother uirk was the inclusion of short fictive narratives stories or vignettes within the body of the text Meant to illustrate some of the ey ideas or concepts discussed in the chapter I found that they often seemed only marginally relevant or were distractingOne last surprise was the lack of reference anywhere in the book or on its covers to the image on the cover While the photo of the cover in the Goodreads archive is a poor one due to some apparent staining on the cover my copy is much clearer After a short search on the Web I discovered that the image is a print made from an engraving done in 1513 by Albrecht Durer called Knight Death and the Devil It s actually a fitting image for some of the topics discussed in the book involving existential concepts like anguish and abandonmentA final complaint about the book s structure is that it lacks an index In my view this is a serious flaw in any academic workNatanson describes his work as a phenomenological and existential history of the ego He elsewhere describes his work as an effort to trace the philosophical history of the individual from birth to death It is a gradual exploration of the self from solitary consciousness to recognition of the Other to sociality to the transcendental spheres of science history art and religion It reminds me of a similar journey undertaken by the consciousness in Hegel s Phenomenology of Spirit although Natanson does not draw this parallel himselfNatanson begins the voyage by asking th. practice a phenomenological
a phenomenological or epoche with regard to our mundane existence Natanson repeats this exercise three times in the first chapter to ensure the reader is following him a reflection perhaps of the difficulty of placing one s taken for granted experience in between brackets This is perhaps also a reflection of Husserl s argument that the true philosopher is always a perpetual beginnerNatanson s egological phenomenology soon turns into a study of the self and the roles it plays in the life world Or in other words the transition from the Me and the I to the We During this journey Natanson has interesting things to say about the methodology of the social sciences vs the approach taken by natural science the epistemology of the novel the existential categories of abandonment and anguish and man s attempts at transcendence through art and religionBut this methodology for understanding Man has weaknesses too It tends to make too great a contrast between human being and the being of anything else Stones and cabbages says Natanson don t have worlds like man does nor do animals like other primates whales or dolphins Man is the only being capable of social action and only man can inhabit a world with meaning This homo centric methodology draws too great a contrast between the human and the natural world at least in my view And it s partly for this reason that the techniues and methodology of the natural sciences tend to be rejected by phenomenological or interpretive sociologists like Schutz and Natanson Second this philosophical approach invariably supports the political and economic status uo because it has few if any critical tools at the mass level One of the reasons Sartre eventually moved on from existentialism to Marxism is that his first philosophical endeavour only provided at best some tools to analyze individuals not social ordersNo #so for Natanson We are all phenomenologically eual so he can say as #for Natanson We are all phenomenologically eual so he can say as does at one point in his book that a belly dancer has the same power and scope of action as a brigadier generalApart from this type of nonsense however Natanson s book is a great read for anyone interested in the philosophy of the social sciences or in his particular brand of existential phenomenology.
